The Power of Focusing on the Journey: A Blueprint for Success
Welcome to the Blue Collar Future podcast. I’m your host, Jaden Robison. Today, we’re going to delve into a topic that has been on my mind lately – the importance of focusing on the journey rather than fixating on the before and after. So often, we rush towards our goals, only thinking about the end result. But what about the process? What about who we are becoming along the way? Let’s explore this concept further and discover how it applies to various aspects of our lives.
The Pitfall of Before and After
“So many of us rush to the finish line. We rush to be done. We rush to get that body, get in shape, get that body we want. We rush to get the career we want. We rush to get the job, the promotion, the extra money, whatever it is. Rush to get the work week done, to get projects done.”
In our fast-paced society, it’s easy to fall into the trap of fixating on the before and after. We become so focused on achieving our goals that we forget to appreciate the journey itself. Whether it’s in fitness, career, or relationships, we often measure our success solely by the end result. But what happens when we reach that goal? Are we truly satisfied? Or do we immediately set our sights on the next milestone?
The True Value of Habits
“It’s not about doing it, to do it and then being done. It’s not a one and done thing. And that is something I see a lot in fitness in general. People think about, oh, well, when I lose 20 pounds, that’s when I’ll be happy. That’s when I’ll have it.”
When it comes to fitness, many people fall into the trap of fixating on the before and after photos. They believe that once they achieve a certain body weight or level of fitness, they will finally be happy. However, the true value lies in the daily habits we develop along the way. It’s not about reaching a specific goal and then reverting back to old habits. It’s about the journey of self-improvement and the habits we cultivate that lead to lasting change.
The Illusion of External Milestones
“People, oh, man. Well, when I make this much money, I only make $20 an hour. When I make $30 an hour, then I’ll be happy. You get to 30 and it’s, oh, well, 40 sounds pretty good. When I get to 40, I’ll have it made. And you get to 40 and it sounds the same as everything else before.”
The same principle applies to our careers and financial goals. We often believe that reaching a certain income level or job title will bring us happiness and fulfillment. However, the reality is that external milestones alone cannot provide lasting satisfaction. It’s the journey of personal growth and the pursuit of meaningful work that truly brings fulfillment. The constant striving for something better is what keeps us engaged and motivated, not the attainment of a specific goal.
The Importance of Purpose and Vision
“What happens when you reach that? Is there something else? Is there something next? Have you become a different person? It’s not so much about the before and the after as it is about the during and who you are becoming.”
To truly find fulfillment in life, we must have a sense of purpose and a clear vision for who we want to become. It’s not about reaching a specific destination; it’s about the person we are becoming along the way. Whether it’s through fitness, career, or relationships, we should constantly be asking ourselves, “Who am I becoming? What habits am I cultivating? How am I growing as an individual?” It’s the daily actions and the person we become that truly matter, not just the end result.
The Core Four Blueprint for Success
“With core four and the system that the order of man uses and many other coaching groups, you do weekly, monthly, quarterly plans, as well as a vision for where you want your life to be, not before and after.”
One effective framework for embracing the journey and focusing on personal growth is the Core Four system. This system, used by various coaching groups, emphasizes four key areas of life: power, passion, purpose, and production. By setting weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals within these areas and regularly evaluating our progress, we can ensure that we are constantly evolving and moving towards our vision for our lives. It’s about the process, the journey, and the person we become, rather than fixating on the before and after.
The Danger of External Validation
“When we announce our goals on social media, we are less likely to follow through on our goals because of the dopamine release from the praise that people get in response to your post.”
One pitfall to be aware of when embarking on a journey of personal growth is the danger of seeking external validation. When we announce our goals on social media and receive praise and validation from others, it can diminish our drive to actually achieve those goals. The dopamine release from the positive responses can trick us into thinking we’ve already accomplished something, leading to complacency. It’s important to stay focused on the process and the person we are becoming, rather than seeking validation from others.
