Building a Healthy Lifestyle in the Blue Collar Industry

By Jaden Robison

Understanding the Physical Demands of the Industry

One common misconception about working in the trades is that it inevitably leads to physical breakdown and chronic pain. However, this belief is not entirely accurate. While it’s true that some individuals in the trades may experience health issues, it’s often due to a lack of proper care and maintenance of their bodies. As I mentioned in a previous episode, humans are built to move and use their bodies to construct things. Working in a manual labor job actually brings us closer to our evolutionary roots. The key is to understand how to move your body properly and take care of yourself to prevent injury and promote long-term health.

“The physical demands are not nearly as severe as people think. People just don’t take care of their bodies.” – Jaden Robison

Ergonomics and Injury Prevention

To ensure your physical well-being in the trades, it’s crucial to learn about ergonomics and injury prevention. This involves understanding how your body is supposed to move and function optimally. Many trade workers neglect this aspect of their health, leading to overuse injuries and chronic pain. By becoming aware of proper body mechanics and implementing mobility exercises and stretches into your routine, you can strengthen weak areas and prevent injuries.

“Learning how your body is supposed to move and supposed to work is important because that means you can then get to a point where you can do that and structure workouts and mobility exercises to get to that point.” – Jaden Robison

Nutrition: Fueling Your Body for Success

Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially for trade workers. While I’m not an expert in this field, I can emphasize the importance of eating a balanced diet and avoiding processed foods. It’s essential to consume enough protein, limit your intake of sugary drinks and fast food, and focus on whole, unprocessed foods. Intermittent fasting is also gaining popularity as a way to regulate your eating habits and promote overall health. By being mindful of what you put into your body, you can optimize your nutrition and support your physical and mental well-being.

“Make sure you’re eating enough protein. Quit overeating and gorging yourself at every single meal. Intermittent fasting is kind of a popular thing right now. But if you think about the way people intermittent fast, it’s probably the closest to the way we have evolved to eat over the last however many thousands of years.” – Jaden Robison

Fitness: Strengthening Your Body and Mind

Physical fitness is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, and it’s particularly important for trade workers. Engaging in regular strength training exercises can help you build muscle, increase your metabolism, and improve your overall well-being. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to spend hours on cardio exercises or go for long runs to achieve optimal fitness. Instead, focus on strength training and mobility exercises that target the specific needs of your trade. By incorporating fitness into your routine, you’ll not only improve your physical health but also boost your mental clarity and energy levels.

“Working out helps regulate your appetite, helps you not crave a bunch of garbage food because it’s not going to make you feel good. When you’re building muscle, your muscle burns more calories, and that helps you lose weight easier.” – Jaden Robison

Mental Health and Stress Management

Maintaining good mental health is crucial for overall well-being, and trade workers are no exception. The physical demands and potential stressors of the job can take a toll on mental health if not properly managed. Fortunately, by focusing on physical health, you can significantly improve your mental well-being. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters, and helps reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, establishing clear goals, maintaining a routine, and seeking support when needed can all contribute to better mental health.

“Your mental health is super important, making sure you’re on top of the kind of stress you’re getting on the job, counteracting it. Doing these four [physical health aspects] helps with the fifth one, mental stress, mental health.” – Jaden Robison

Conclusion and Future Outlook

In conclusion, building a healthy lifestyle while working in the trades is not only possible but essential for long-term success and well-being. By understanding the physical demands of the industry, practicing ergonomics and injury prevention, prioritizing nutrition, engaging in regular fitness activities, and taking care of your mental health, you can thrive in your trade career. It’s important to remember that these aspects of health are interconnected, and by focusing on one, you’ll likely see improvements in others.
